Webb Telescope Uncovers Abundant Hydrocarbons in Distant Galaxy's Core
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have detected an unexpected abundance of small gas-phase hydrocarbons in the obscured nucleus of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 07251-0248. This galaxy is located in the constellation Monoceros. The findings reveal a variety of small and complex organic molecules, providing new insights into complex carbon-based chemistry in extreme cosmic environments. The research was conducted by teams including the Center for Astrobiology (CAB), CSIC-INTA, and the University of Oxford. These discoveries help advance understanding of chemical processes occurring in distant galaxies. The observations were reported in early February 2026.
