NASA Confirms Safe Lunar Flyby of Asteroid 2024 YR4 in 2032
Initial observations of asteroid 2024 YR4 indicated a roughly 4% chance of it colliding with the Moon in 2032, which sparked scientific interest due to the potential for unique research opportunities and visible effects such as a bright flash or meteor showers. Early assessments ruled out any threat to Earth but focused on monitoring the asteroid's trajectory closely. Later, NASA and other space agencies refined the asteroid's path using updated data, including observations from the James Webb Space Telescope.
These refinements confirmed that asteroid 2024 YR4 will safely pass by the Moon at a distance of about 13,200 miles, eliminating the risk of impact. This confirmation has alleviated earlier concerns and shifted the focus away from potential lunar collision scenarios.
