Colorado Drivers Seek Reimbursement for Vehicle Damage from Tainted Gasoline

Summary

Colorado drivers are seeking compensation after purchasing diesel-contaminated unleaded gasoline, leading to significant vehicle repair costs.

Several gas stations in the Denver metro area inadvertently sold unleaded gasoline contaminated with diesel fuel between January 7 and January 8, 2026. The affected stations include King Soopers, Costco, and Murphy Express locations. The contamination originated from the HF Sinclair terminal in Henderson, Colorado, where diesel fuel was mistakenly loaded and distributed to numerous stations during this period.

Customers who purchased the tainted fuel have reported significant vehicle damage, with repair costs estimated between $1,500 and $3,000. Lance Strait, a customer affected by the contaminated gas from a King Soopers station in Parker, expressed his concerns, stating, "I trusted them to provide gas that wouldn't be tainted with diesel; that's kind of like a basic requirement for fuel suppliers to not have tainted fuel."

State officials have advised affected customers to contact the station where they purchased the fuel to initiate the reimbursement process. King Soopers' parent company, Kroger, released a statement expressing regret for the inconvenience and disruption caused to customers. The company emphasized its commitment to working directly with impacted customers to resolve their concerns and encouraged those affected to contact their local store for assistance.

The Colorado Division of Oil and Public Safety is also encouraging impacted customers to contact them by submitting a complaint online or calling 303-866-4967.
