Suspect Arrested in 2021 D.C. Pipe Bomb Case
Brian J. Cole Jr. confessed to planting pipe bombs near political party headquarters in Washington, D.C., citing disillusionment with the 2020 election and both major parties.
Federal authorities have arrested Brian J. Cole Jr., 30, of Woodbridge, Virginia, in connection with the placement of two pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021. The devices, discovered the following day during the Capitol riot, did not detonate.
According to a Justice Department memo, Cole confessed to planting the bombs, expressing disillusionment with the 2020 election results and frustration toward both major political parties. He stated that he believed someone needed to "speak up" for those who felt the election was stolen. Cole also mentioned that "something just snapped" after observing the political climate deteriorate.
Investigators linked Cole to the crime through financial transactions for bomb-making materials, cellphone data placing him near the scene, and surveillance footage. A search of his residence uncovered additional bomb components. Prosecutors argue that Cole poses a danger to the community and have requested his continued detention pending trial.
Cole appeared in federal court on December 5, 2025, facing charges of transporting an explosive device and attempted malicious destruction by means of explosive materials. A detention hearing is scheduled for December 15.
