NYC Mayor-Elect Mamdani Urges Starbucks Boycott Amid Barista Strike
New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani calls for a boycott of Starbucks in support of striking baristas seeking fair contracts.
New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani has called on consumers to boycott Starbucks as baristas across the country initiate an open-ended strike demanding fair contracts.
"Starbucks workers across the country are on an Unfair Labor Practices strike, fighting for a fair contract," Mamdani stated on X. "While workers are on strike, I won't be buying any Starbucks, and I'm asking you to join us."
The strike coincides with Starbucks' annual Red Cup Day, a promotional event that traditionally boosts sales by offering free reusable holiday cups to customers.
This marks the fourth strike organized by the union since 2023 and the third since CEO Brian Niccol assumed leadership in October 2024.
A Starbucks spokesperson indicated that, despite the strike, the company anticipated exceeding sales expectations for the day across its North American outlets.
Mamdani's support for the striking workers underscores his commitment to labor rights as he prepares to assume office.
"Together, we can send a powerful message: No contract, no coffee," Mamdani emphasized.
The strike follows stalled contract negotiations and the company's recent announcement of a restructuring plan that includes the closure of over 600 stores nationwide.
