Elderly Cruise Passenger Found Dead on Lizard Island After Ship Departure
An 80-year-old woman was found deceased on Lizard Island after her cruise ship departed without her, prompting investigations into the incident.
An 80-year-old woman was found deceased on Lizard Island, part of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, after being left behind by her cruise ship. The woman, identified as Suzanne Rees from Sydney, was on the second day of a 60-day cruise aboard the Coral Adventurer when the incident occurred.
On Saturday, Rees participated in a hiking excursion to Cook's Look, the island's highest point. During the hike, she felt unwell due to the extreme heat and decided to return to the ship alone. The vessel departed the island between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time without conducting a passenger count. Rees was reported missing later that night when she failed to appear for dinner. A search operation was initiated, and her body was discovered the following morning about 50 meters off the hiking trail, with indications of a fall.
Rees' daughter, Katherine Rees, expressed her distress over the incident, stating, "We are shocked and saddened that the Coral Adventurer left Lizard Island after an organised excursion without my Mum." She described the event as a "failure of care and common sense."
Coral Expeditions CEO Mark Fifield conveyed the company's condolences, saying, "We have expressed our heartfelt condolences to the Rees family and remain deeply sorry that this has occurred." He added that the company is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including why Rees was not accounted for during boarding. The coroner will also investigate the death, which is currently considered non-suspicious.
Lizard Island, located approximately 27 kilometers off Cooktown in far north Queensland, is known for its natural beauty and luxury accommodations. The Coral Adventurer, with a capacity of 120 passengers and 46 crew members, had departed from Cairns on October 24 for a voyage around Australia, with Lizard Island being one of the first stops on the itinerary.
