M5 MacBook Pro Shows Improved Thermal Performance Over M4 Despite High Temperatures
Apple's M5 MacBook Pro reaches up to 99°C under heavy load, yet maintains cooler operation compared to the M4 model.
Apple's latest 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro demonstrates enhanced thermal management over its predecessor, the M4, despite both models utilizing a single-fan cooling system. In performance tests, the M5's system-on-chip (SoC) reached a maximum temperature of 99 degrees Celsius under heavy workloads, while the M4 exceeded 100 degrees Celsius under similar conditions.
Benchmarking with Cinebench 2024 revealed that the M5's cooling solution struggled to maintain lower temperatures during intensive tasks, leading to thermal throttling. However, the M5 managed to run cooler than the M4 while drawing slightly more power, indicating minor thermal improvements within the same chassis design.
The M5 MacBook Pro's performance enhancements are accompanied by increased power consumption. During intensive tasks, the M5 drew an average of 28 watts, compared to the M4's 17 watts in similar tests.
These findings suggest that while the M5 MacBook Pro offers improved thermal performance over the M4, the single-fan cooling system may still be a limiting factor under heavy workloads.
