Alaska Storm Displaces Thousands, Causes Extensive Damage
The remnants of Typhoon Halong have severely impacted western Alaska, displacing over 2,000 residents and causing significant destruction in several communities.
The remnants of Typhoon Halong struck western Alaska on October 12, 2025, bringing hurricane-force winds and record-high water levels that devastated several small communities. The storm displaced more than 2,000 residents, necessitating one of the most significant airlift operations in Alaska's history. At least one person has died, and two others are missing.
In the village of Kwigillingok, resident Steven Anaver experienced the storm's severity firsthand. As floodwaters rose rapidly, his home was lifted from its foundation and carried away with him inside. Anaver documented the ordeal, capturing videos of the interior as water levels climbed and the structure drifted. He recounted the experience as a significant challenge for his anxiety, noting that he kept calling his family during the event. After floating approximately a mile, his home came to rest near a riverbank, and neighbors assisted him in evacuating once the waters receded.
The storm's impact extended beyond Kwigillingok. In Kipnuk, initial assessments indicated that 121 homes—about 90% of the total—were destroyed. Governor Mike Dunleavy has requested a federal disaster declaration, emphasizing the extensive damage and the prolonged displacement of residents. He stated that due to the time, space, distance, geography, and weather in the affected areas, it is likely that many survivors will be unable to return to their communities this winter. The state is prioritizing rapid repairs, but some damaged communities may not be viable for winter occupancy.
Evacuation efforts are ongoing, with hundreds being airlifted to larger cities like Anchorage. The Alaska National Guard has been instrumental in these operations, providing shelter and essential services to those displaced. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed as recovery efforts continue.
