UN Reports Over 6,000 Killed in RSF's El-Fasher Offensive
A UN report details mass killings and atrocities committed by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces during their late October 2025 offensive in El-Fasher, North Darfur.
In late October 2025, Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied Arab militias launched a three-day offensive on El-Fasher, North Darfur, resulting in over 6,000 civilian deaths, according to a United Nations report. The UN Human Rights Office documented mass killings, summary executions, sexual violence, abductions, and torture during the assault. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated, "The wanton violations that were perpetrated by the RSF and allied Arab militia in the final offensive on El-Fasher underscore that persistent impunity fuels continued cycles of violence."
The RSF's offensive, which began on October 25, targeted El-Fasher, the last Sudanese army stronghold in Darfur. The UN report detailed atrocities including mass killings, sexual violence, and abductions, often ethnically motivated against African tribes like the Zaghawa. The RSF reportedly killed 4,400 people inside El-Fasher and 1,600 more who attempted to flee. Specific incidents included the massacre of around 500 people sheltering at Rashid dormitory and the execution of 600, including 50 children, at the university.
The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has led to the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with parts of the country facing famine. The UN has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians and aid workers.
