A federal grand jury in Virginia has indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on charges of bank fraud and making false statements related to a 2020 mortgage application.
A federal grand jury in Virginia has indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. The indictment alleges that in 2020, James misrepresented her intent to occupy a Norfolk, Virginia property as a secondary residence to secure favorable loan terms, while allegedly renting it out instead.
James, a Democrat and vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, previously led a civil fraud case against Trump and his company, resulting in a significant financial penalty that was later overturned on appeal.
In response to the indictment, James accused the president of using the justice system for political retaliation, referring to the charges as part of his "desperate weaponization" of legal processes.
The case is being prosecuted in the Eastern District of Virginia, with James scheduled to appear in court on October 24.
