Zelenskyy doubts Trump’s claim of a Ukraine-Russia energy strike pause

Résumé

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv does not trust that Russia will honor a supposed agreement to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, contradicting statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv remains skeptical that Russia will keep any promise to stop striking energy facilities, countering U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that the two sides had agreed to a halt. Trump had attributed high diesel prices to Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and asserted that a mutual cessation of attacks on energy targets was in place.

Zelenskyy posted on X that Ukraine is not confident Russia intends to adhere to any such agreement and that Kyiv would only cease its own strikes if Russia demonstrably refrains from targeting electricity, energy sites, critical infrastructure, or food supplies. He added that any ceasefire must be long-term and not merely a short-term measure to facilitate Russia’s parliamentary elections in September.

The Kremlin has not responded to Trump’s announcement. Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov praised Trump’s call for Kyiv to stop attacks on “peaceful economic infrastructure,” but did not indicate whether Russia would halt its own bombings of Ukrainian infrastructure.

Trump previously negotiated a three-day ceasefire in May for Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, during which Moscow launched dozens of drones and a ballistic missile at Ukrainian targets.
