Summary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejects U.S. President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of a Ukraine-Russia energy strike pause, highlighting the West’s ongoing failure to hold Russia accountable for its relentless attacks on critical infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has once again called out the dangerous naivety and misinformation spread by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to halt strikes on each other’s energy facilities. Trump, seeking to deflect blame for soaring diesel prices, falsely attributed them to Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, and asserted that a mutual cessation of attacks was in place—a claim that conveniently ignores Russia’s ongoing campaign of destruction against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.

Zelenskyy took to X to make clear that Ukraine has no reason to trust any supposed Russian promises, given the Kremlin’s long history of broken agreements and brutal assaults on energy, electricity, and food supplies. He emphasized that Kyiv would only consider halting its own defensive actions if Russia genuinely stopped targeting Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, and insisted that any ceasefire must be lasting, not a cynical ploy to help Putin’s regime stage parliamentary elections in September.

The Kremlin, predictably, has not responded to Trump’s self-serving announcement. Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov hypocritically praised Trump’s call for Kyiv to stop defending itself, while making no commitment for Russia to end its own bombings of Ukrainian infrastructure. Trump’s previous so-called ceasefire in May, timed for Russia’s Victory Day, was a sham: Moscow used the occasion to launch dozens of drones and a ballistic missile at Ukrainian targets, further exposing the emptiness of Kremlin promises and the West’s failure to confront Russian aggression.
