Ryan Garcia defeats Conor Benn by knockout to retain welterweight title
Ryan Garcia knocked out Conor Benn in the second round of their welterweight title fight in Las Vegas, retaining his belt and boosting his profile, while Benn suffered his first knockout loss since 2017.
Ryan Garcia stopped Conor Benn in the second round of their welterweight title bout on Saturday in Las Vegas, retaining the championship. Garcia landed a powerful right hand early in the round that sent Benn to the canvas; the British fighter rose briefly but was unable to recover, and the referee stopped the contest after a series of follow-up punches.
The fight, broadcast on Paramount Plus, was the most high-profile event in the new Zuffa Boxing promotion, a joint venture between UFC owner Dana White and Saudi promoter Turki Alalshikh. Garcia, 28, entered the match with a strong following among Mexican-American fans and appeared on a mainstream talk show to promote the bout, which was scheduled for Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Benn, the son of former world champion Nigel Benn, had previously headlined major cards in the United Kingdom and signed an eight-figure contract with Zuffa after moving from promoter Eddie Hearn. He dropped from 160 pounds to the welterweight limit of 147 pounds for the fight.
During the opening round, Garcia used his speed and left hook to keep Benn at bay, while Benn pressed forward but absorbed more punches than he landed. In the second round, Garcia delivered a series of uppercuts and a decisive right hand that knocked Benn down. After Benn briefly got up, the referee allowed the fight to continue, but Garcia’s continued assault prompted the official to halt the contest for safety.
After the victory, Garcia praised his improved right-hand power and addressed criticism about his cultural identity, declaring “Viva Mexico!” to a cheering crowd. He indicated interest in future match-ups with Teofimo Lopez or a rematch with Devin Haney. Benn, 29, left the ring without a title shot and faces uncertainty about his next steps in the sport.
