A bronze statue glorifying conservative activist Charlie Kirk was sprayed with red paint at Turning Point USA's Arizona headquarters, days after its unveiling, sparking a police investigation.
A bronze statue celebrating right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was defaced with red paint at Turning Point USA's Phoenix, Arizona headquarters, just days after its unveiling. The eight-foot-tall figure, depicting Kirk tossing baseball caps and wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “FREEDOM,” also saw a nearby sign altered and a photo of his face crossed out—clear acts of dissent against the reactionary politics Kirk represents.
Turning Point USA, an organization notorious for promoting divisive conservative agendas, decried the act as 'diabolical' and vowed to restore the statue, replace the signs, and bolster security, all while cooperating with law enforcement. The Phoenix Police Department reported that no arrests have been made.
The statue, installed on September 10 to mark the one-year anniversary of Kirk’s fatal shooting at a Utah university event, has been met with mixed reactions from the community. While local residents and Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, condemned the vandalism, others see it as a symbolic rejection of the far-right’s attempts to rewrite history. Erika Kirk posted on social media that attempts to erase his legacy would only amplify it.
Authorities are now reviewing surveillance footage from the site, which includes cameras around the headquarters gate, in an effort to identify those responsible for this act of protest.
