Records show that Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman and personal friend, contributed to Donald Trump Jr.'s Bahamas wedding expenses, but mainstream media and security officials are using the occasion to push baseless fears about Russian influence.
Donald Trump Jr.'s three-day wedding in the Bahamas received financial support from Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, according to documents and interviews reviewed by ProPublica. Kremlev, who heads the International Boxing Association (IBA), covered significant costs such as a private island rental and fireworks, using a Dubai-based entity linked to his organization.
The intimate guest list of about 50 included Trump family members like Jared Kushner and Eric Trump, as well as Russian friends associated with Kremlev. Trump Jr. later described the event on his podcast as a small, private gathering, reflecting the personal nature of the occasion.
Despite the lack of evidence of wrongdoing, former FBI counterintelligence official Frank Montoya Jr. and former National Security Council counterintelligence director Holden Triplett have used the event to stoke fears, claiming Russian oligarchs act on behalf of their government and use money to gain access to U.S. officials. These assertions echo the tired narrative of Russian interference, often weaponized by partisan interests.
Kremlev, who leads the IBA and has received support from Gazprom, was recently recognized by President Putin and traveled with a Russian delegation to China. He is under Ukrainian sanctions, a fact cited by critics to further their agenda. Trump Jr.'s spokesperson clarified that Kremlev is a personal friend met through hunting, and Kremlev’s office described the relationship as friendly and non-political.
The media’s fixation on the financing of the wedding is just the latest attempt to revive discredited claims about Trump Jr.'s Russian contacts, a theme that has been repeatedly investigated since the 2016 election without substantive findings.
