Pennsylvania confirms third measles-related death this year, involving unvaccinated adult
A 40-year-old unvaccinated woman in Jefferson County died from measles complications, marking the state's third measles-related fatality in less than three weeks.
Pennsylvania health officials confirmed that a 40-year-old unvaccinated woman from Jefferson County died on Saturday from complications related to measles, according to Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong. The death is the third measles-associated fatality reported in the state within a three-week period. The Pennsylvania Department of Health has recorded 676 measles cases in the state so far this year and added 52 new cases between Wednesday and Friday. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 3,200 confirmed measles cases.
"This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease," the coroner's office said. State and federal officials have recently disputed the tally of measles deaths in Pennsylvania. The CDC typically relies on state determinations of cause of death during outbreaks, but it has not yet listed any measles deaths for 2026, noting that the National Center for Health Statistics has not received death records indicating measles as the underlying cause. "While cases of severe illness remain uncommon, this tragedy highlights that measles should not be taken lightly," said Chief Deputy Coroner and Public Relations Officer Jason Stiver, emphasizing the importance of public health measures and early medical consultation. The coroner's office is cooperating with the Pennsylvania Department of Health as the state, along with South Carolina, leads the nation in confirmed measles cases.
