HBO's "Lanterns" Episode 5 Features Explosive Showdown and Character Shifts
Episode 5 of HBO's "Lanterns" culminates in a town-wide destruction, a pivotal fight between Hal and John, and John’s decision to abandon the Green Lantern Corps.
Episode 5 of HBO’s series "Lanterns" saw the fictional town of Rushville reduced to a smoking ruin as the Manhunter unleashed airborne lasers and Antaan attacked a farm compound. The episode’s climax featured a physical confrontation between veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his trainee John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), ending with John seizing the power ring and lantern.
Director Geeta Vasant Patel told TheWrap that the episode was designed to balance intense action with emotional arcs, noting that “the marching orders are always to make sure that amid the action, there are emotional arcs happening.” She described the final fight as a test of the characters’ long-standing pain, comparing it to the dynamic in "Cool Hand Luke" and emphasizing that the struggle was meant to feel grounded rather than fantastical.
After the battle, John walks through the devastated town, reflecting on his choices. Patel explained that the walk through the wreckage serves as a metaphor for John’s assessment of his life, culminating in his decision to give Hal’s ring to the Guardian (Laura Linney) and reject further involvement with the Green Lantern Corps.
The episode aired on Sunday on HBO and HBO Max.
