Two Killed in High-Speed Irvine McLaren Crash, Including Local Car-Show Co-Founder
A 2019 McLaren crashed at an intersection in Irvine early Sunday, killing the driver and a passenger, one of whom was identified as James Wehr, a co-founder of the South OC Cars and Coffee show.
Police in Irvine reported that a 2019 McLaren collided with a tree at the intersection of Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue at about 12:18 a.m. on Sunday. The vehicle had been stopped at a red light, accelerated rapidly when the light changed, and the driver lost control, causing the car to jump a curb, split in two and catch fire. Both occupants of the car were pronounced dead, though police have not released their names.
An Instagram post from the South OC Cars and Coffee page identified one of the victims as 27-year-old James Wehr, who co-founded the weekly car-show that draws thousands of performance and muscle cars to San Clemente. The post expressed the group's grief and requested privacy for the family.
"This morning, just after midnight, we lost our son and brother James, in a motor accident. We respectfully ask for privacy as a family, as we process this loss," the page wrote.
