Bengals defeat Buccaneers 33-27 as defense forces four fumbles

Summary

Cincinnati used three first-half turnovers to build a lead and held off Tampa Bay’s late rally, winning the season opener 33-27.

The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 33-27 on Sunday at Paycor Stadium, capitalizing on three first-half turnovers that each resulted in Bengals touchdowns. Linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. recovered a strip-sack of Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and returned it 27 yards for a score, giving Cincinnati a 24-10 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter intercepted a pass from Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown, narrowing the gap to 27-20. A sack by Boye Mafe in the fourth quarter forced Mayfield’s third fumble and halted Tampa Bay’s momentum, but Mayfield later scored on a drive that cut the deficit to six points with 3:19 left. Burrow and the Bengals offense then ran down the clock to secure the win.

The Bengals’ defensive investments from the offseason were highlighted, with several high-paid free agents and recent draft picks making key plays, including forced fumbles by safety Bryan Cook and a sack-fumble by Mafe. Tampa Bay, despite scoring 27 points, committed four total fumbles, three by Mayfield, marking the most the quarterback has lost in a single game.

Cincinnati also emphasized the under-center formation, running 17 plays for 78 yards, primarily in the fourth quarter to manage the clock. Although Burrow threw an interception that led to a Buccaneers touchdown, the overall offensive strategy helped preserve the lead.

"We focused on finishing games better this year," Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said after the win.

The victory gave Cincinnati a 1-0 start to the season.
