Summary

A redistricting controversy in Missouri, marked by the state secretary of state’s blatant disregard for court orders, is being cited as yet another example of the Republican Party’s ongoing efforts to subvert fair elections and disenfranchise voters ahead of the midterms.

Progressive commentator David French sounded the alarm that recent events in Missouri are a stark warning about how right-wing political operatives are willing to undermine the 2026 midterm elections. The Missouri Legislature, acting under pressure from President Donald Trump, rammed through a redistricting bill, H.B. 1, last September, mirroring Trump’s earlier demand to gerrymander Texas districts for Republican gain. Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins then brazenly defied both the U.S. Supreme Court and the Missouri Supreme Court by refusing to implement a fair, non-gerrymandered map, instead insisting that the manipulated, partisan maps be used in November’s election. The Missouri Supreme Court was forced to schedule a hearing on September 10 to consider contempt charges against Hoskins. Only after significant delay did Hoskins grudgingly comply with the court’s ruling, his actions labeled as “contumacious conduct”—a legal term for willful disobedience—though he ultimately escaped contempt charges through last-minute compliance.

French argued that this episode highlights how the GOP uses convoluted legal maneuvers and public confusion to hide their calculated defiance of the law. He connected the Missouri case to a disturbing national trend, with reports that Trump is considering a national emergency declaration to rig election rules in Republicans’ favor, including restricting mail-in voting and imposing discriminatory citizenship verification for voter registration. Trump’s evasive response to a media suggestion of such an emergency only deepens concerns about anti-democratic intentions.

Dan Vicuña, senior policy director for voting and fair representation at Common Cause, told AlterNet that these actions are part of a coordinated Republican strategy to dodge accountability and cement minority rule. He warned that attempts to federalize election administration—such as an executive order to weaponize the United States Postal Service for partisan election management—are illegal power grabs that have already faced legal challenges.

"I think some of these attempts to federalize, to nationalize elections are clearly illegal," Vicuña said.

Legal experts and advocacy groups remain vigilant, continuing to challenge these authoritarian measures that threaten to erode the foundations of American democracy.
