Pentagon officials deny claims of staged interview with downed pilots

Resumen

The Pentagon says the decision by one of two U.S. pilots to appear on a television program was personal and that operational security was protected, rejecting reports that the defense secretary pushed the appearance.

Two U.S. Air Force pilots whose F-15 was shot down over Iran were featured in an interview on the Sunday premiere of CBS’s 60 Minutes, a move that some sources said was encouraged by senior defense officials. The Pentagon said the appearance was the pilots’ own choice and that no operational details were compromised.

"The decision to participate in the interview was each pilot’s alone—because it is their story," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told CNN. "We took great care to ensure operational security, sources, and methods were protected."

Parnell also called a CNN report suggesting the defense secretary pressured the pilots to appear a “complete lie,” adding that any suggestion otherwise would disparage the service members involved. The interview was arranged after CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss contacted the defense secretary’s office and other administration officials.

The episode comes as public scrutiny of the defense department’s leadership grows amid the ongoing conflict, with critics questioning the department’s communication strategy and the suitability of its senior officials.
