Apple unveils upgraded sensing system, health tools and audio intelligence for Watch Series 12

Summary

Apple introduced a redesigned sensor array, higher-frequency health monitoring and new audio-processing features for the Watch Series 12, alongside a refreshed Health app interface.

Apple announced several hardware and software upgrades for its latest smartwatch, the Watch Series 12. The device now incorporates a re-engineered sensing system that replaces the previous four-LED diamond layout with a ring of twelve lights, expanding the contact area with the skin. Updated photodiodes and electrodes, combined with increased sampling rates, are intended to deliver more precise heart-rate, VO2 max and heart-rate-variability measurements. Apple claims internal testing shows the Series 12 provides the most accurate heart-rate data among wearables.

The enhanced health data powers a new Readiness score that rates daily fitness, sleep and vitals on a scale of 0 to 10, and adds an HRV metric measured every five minutes. The Health app also receives a major redesign, featuring AI-generated summaries, customizable tiles and a Longevity tab that aggregates seven wellness categories and displays a “health age.”

Series 12 introduces an “Audio Intelligence” suite built around the S11 chip’s secure enclave, which processes raw microphone input locally and does not store recordings. Improvements include faster Shazam song identification using a 15-second audio buffer, on-device sound-recognition alerts for alarms or sirens without a paired iPhone, and two new user-activated features: Live Rewind, which transcribes the last 15 seconds of nearby speech when the dial is double-clicked, and Siri Recap, which creates high-level summaries of events for later review on a paired iPhone. Apple states that only encrypted transcripts leave the secure enclave and remain inaccessible to the operating system, apps, users or Apple.

The Series 12 also adds new case materials, such as a ceramic finish praised for its smooth appearance. The updated watch and accompanying software are expected to roll out later this year.
