Rams and 49ers to open NFL season with historic game in Melbourne
The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers will play the NFL's first regular-season game in Australia on Thursday, with contrasting travel plans and high-profile roster moves adding intrigue to the Week 1 matchup.
The NFL will stage its inaugural regular-season game on Australian soil on Thursday, sending the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers to Melbourne. The two NFC West rivals will travel roughly 8,000 miles, with the 49ers arriving more than a week before kickoff and the Rams flying in the day before, a logistical difference expected to generate discussion regardless of the outcome.
League officials selected the matchup to feature a divisional rivalry, pairing the Rams—viewed as early favorites after a busy offseason—with the 49ers, who reached the playoffs last season. Los Angeles added defensive end Myles Garrett, a Defensive Player of the Year, and re-signed former star Aaron Donald, though Donald will not suit up for the opener. The Rams also retained cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, and quarterback Matthew Stafford will join Garrett on the field.
San Francisco, coached by Kyle Shanahan, brings a roster that includes quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey, offensive tackle Trent Williams, receiver Mike Evans and tight end George Kittle, who is returning from an Achilles injury. Shanahan holds an 11-7 regular-season record against Rams head coach Sean McVay.
Betting analysts note that the teams' differing travel schedules could affect performance, with some oddsmakers favoring the Rams' shorter trip for the first two weeks. The current line lists Los Angeles as a 3.5-point favorite in a game projected to total 48.5 points.
Fantasy observers highlight three points of interest: whether the high-scoring offenses can defy recent trends for games played abroad; how the 49ers' veteran players will perform given age and injury histories; and how the Rams will allocate carries between Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.
"Garrett and Matthew Stafford will make history as the first reigning MVP-DPOY combination ever on the same roster," the Rams' announcement said.
"The odds have been static for this game — L.A. -3.5 and a total of 48.5 — so it seems like sharp bettors are taking a wait-and-see approach," a betting analyst noted.
The game will be broadcast in prime time and could set the tone for the rest of the season for both clubs.
