Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown exits game with walking boot after ankle injury

Summary

A.J. Brown left the Patriots’ loss to Seattle in a walking boot due to an ankle injury and is expected to miss time, while teammates said he remained in good spirits.

Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown departed the team locker room wearing a walking boot on his right foot after the New England squad fell 13-10 to the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday. The injury, sustained in the third quarter, is expected to keep him out for an unspecified period.

"He told us that everything was going to be all right," Patriots receiver Romeo Doubs said after the game, adding that Brown was in good spirits.

Doubs noted the team will need a plan without their top receiver, and defensive captain Kevin Byard also confirmed Brown’s positive mood. Coach Mike Vrabel did not provide an injury update during his post-game press conference.

Brown had been the Patriots’ leading receiver at the time of his exit, with three catches for 26 yards and a 34-yard pass-interference penalty that set up the team’s only touchdown. In his absence, reserve wideout Mack Hollins contributed three second-half receptions, including a fourth-down conversion on the final drive, but the Patriots were unable to mount a comeback.

Vrabel is scheduled to address the media on Thursday at 2 p.m., where further details on Brown’s status may be released. The Patriots’ receiver depth now consists of Doubs, Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Efton Chism III and Kyle Williams as they prepare for their home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 20.
