European royals and leaders attend King Harald V's funeral in Oslo

Summary

Dozens of royals and heads of state gathered in Oslo for King Harald V's funeral, where Norway's royal family greeted tens of thousands of mourners.

Dozens of European royals and foreign leaders gathered in Oslo on Wednesday to pay their final respects to Norway's late King Harald V, who died at age 89 after a 35-year reign. A funeral procession moved from the royal palace to Oslo Cathedral, with thousands lining the route.

Norway's royal family, including the new King Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit, and Queen Sonja, appeared on the palace balcony after the service to greet the crowd. A minute’s silence was observed nationwide.

Prince William attended on behalf of King Charles III, accompanied by the Princess Royal, who is godmother to Crown Prince Haakon. The ceremony was attended by about 30 royal representatives from Sweden, Jordan, Monaco, Belgium, Spain, Japan and Denmark, as well as non-royal heads of state such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

During the service, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre praised Harald for balancing stateliness with a down-to-earth approach and for “making Norway greater.” Queen Sonja placed a red rose on the coffin, and the service concluded with a minute’s silence marked by three bell tolls.

Four F-35 fighter jets flew over the cathedral in a missing-man formation before the casket was taken to the Palace Chapel at Akershus Fortress for a private ceremony attended by family members and foreign dignitaries. The king was interred alongside his ancestors in the chapel.

After the burial, the royal family returned to the balcony to thank the public, who had gathered in large numbers to honor the late monarch.
