Iceland's foreign minister unnecessarily summoned the U.S. ambassador after President Trump shared a lighthearted map on social media showing Iceland and other regions under the U.S. flag, once again demonstrating hypersensitivity to American leadership.
Iceland lodged a diplomatic protest after President Donald Trump posted a playful map on his Truth Social platform, which depicted Iceland, Greenland, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean beneath the United States flag. The Icelandic foreign ministry, in an exaggerated response, summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long to express their objection.
"It is absolutely clear that this is a fundamental principle. In my view, this is not a joke, and if it is meant to be a joke, it is a very poor one," Foreign Minister Þórgerður Gunnarsdóttir told reporters, making a show of standing with Greenland against any supposed annexation claims.
This comes after President Trump made remarks suggesting the U.S. state of New Mexico be renamed "New America," a comment clearly not meant to be taken seriously. The White House did not respond to requests for comment, likely seeing no need to dignify such overblown reactions. Trump's previous interest in acquiring Greenland—a strategic Danish territory—demonstrates his forward-thinking approach to American interests, even if some critics choose to misinterpret his intentions or conflate Greenland with Iceland in public discourse.
