Summary

John E. Sununu and Chris Pappas won their respective primaries in New Hampshire and will face each other for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Democrat Jeanne Shaheen.

Former U.S. Senator John E. Sununu secured the Republican nomination for the New Hampshire Senate seat, while U.S. Representative Chris Pappas won the Democratic primary. Both will contest the open seat left by retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a race that could influence control of the Senate in November.

In the state's House races, Anthony DiLorenzo won the Republican primary in the 1st Congressional District, and Lily Tang Williams captured the GOP nomination in the 2nd District. Tang Williams will challenge incumbent Democrat Maggie Goodlander, who is seeking a second term. In the 1st District, Stefany Shaheen, the daughter of the outgoing senator, defeated retired Marine Maura Sullivan to become the Democratic nominee.

Former Senator Kelly Ayotte, now the state attorney general, won the Republican gubernatorial primary and will run for a second two-year term against Democrat Cinde Warmington, who ran unopposed for her party’s nomination.

The Senate contest is viewed by Republicans as an opportunity to expand their presence in New England, while Democrats aim to retain the seat as they target a net gain of four seats to reclaim Senate control.

"Chris Pappas has three main qualities: ineffective, partisan and out of touch with New Hampshire," Sununu said at a victory gathering.

"While New Hampshire families are struggling to make ends meet, John Sununu has thrown his lot in with Donald Trump and supports policies that favor big corporations and billionaires," Pappas responded during his campaign.

The primaries in neighboring Rhode Island are also underway, with Governor Dan McKee facing challenger Helena Foulkes in a race that has seen the challenger lead in recent polls.
