Tropical Storm Marie damages dozens of homes along Orange County beach

Summary

Tropical Storm Marie's high surf left at least 14 beachfront houses in Dana Point damaged, with about a dozen declared uninhabitable, and prompted evacuations in Long Beach.

Tropical Storm Marie generated 6-to-10-foot waves that battered the Orange County coastline over the Labor Day weekend. In Dana Point, a Capistrano Bay District representative said at least 14 homes on Beach Road were damaged, and roughly a dozen were red-tagged as uninhabitable.

Authorities attempted to place boulders to protect the properties, but overnight tides remained too high for crews to complete the work.

Further north, the Long Beach Peninsula experienced flooding when seawater overtopped a seawall, forcing firefighters to evacuate residents from 20 homes between 63rd Place and 67th Place.

Local officials warned that dangerous surf and strong rip and longshore currents could create life-threatening conditions through Tuesday night.

"Don’t underestimate the storm," the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department posted on social media.

The National Weather Service forecast a 50%-60% chance of above-average precipitation across Southern California and southwestern Arizona from Sept. 9 to Sept. 15.
