Eastbound Highway 50 Closed After Standoff Near Howe Avenue in Sacramento

Summary

Police closed eastbound Highway 50 near Howe Avenue on Tuesday afternoon following a vehicle stop that appears linked to a shooting in the area, leaving one person dead.

One lane of eastbound Highway 50 near Howe Avenue was closed on Tuesday afternoon after law-enforcement officers surrounded a stopped vehicle and removed a person who was later pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance drones hovered over the car as officers, with guns drawn, secured the area. Westbound traffic resumed after the incident.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said a shooting was reported around 3 p.m. in the 800 block of Howe Avenue, near a Panera Bread. Deputies found a victim who was unresponsive and later confirmed dead. Investigators indicated the highway stop was "possibly related" to that shooting and focused on the intersection of Howe and Northrup Avenues.

Earlier that morning, a separate pursuit involving three law-enforcement agencies ended near Hazel Avenue on Highway 50, where officers fired at a driver who also died. The highway has been shut down twice on the same day as investigations continue.
