Cardinals weigh rookie running back Jeremiyah Love's availability for season opener
Arizona Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is making progress after a preseason high-ankle sprain, but his participation in Week 1 remains uncertain as the team evaluates his health.
Arizona Cardinals running back Jeramiyah Love is progressing in his recovery from a high-ankle sprain suffered in the preseason, but the team has not confirmed his status for the opening game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Mike LaFleur told reporters that Love "took another step yesterday and he'll take another step today" and is working toward being ready for Week 1, though the final decision will depend on his continued progress.
The Cardinals are expected to release their first official injury report on Wednesday, which should clarify Love's availability. If he is unable to play, backup Tyler Allgeier could assume a larger workload, especially with James Conner on injured reserve and other backs on the roster dealing with injuries.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo previously estimated a 50-50 chance for Love to suit up, and later reports indicated the team is "hopeful" he can return. LaFleur added that Love may be used in specific situations if he is cleared, while Allgeier is expected to handle short-yardage and goal-line duties.
Love finished the preseason with 73 scrimmage yards and 14 touches in his most recent game, but the coaching staff has indicated he will be re-evaluated in the coming week before a final roster decision is made.
