Former Ukrainian Parliamentary Speaker Andriy Parubiy Assassinated in Lviv
Andriy Parubiy, former speaker of Ukraine's parliament and key figure in the 2013–14 Euromaidan protests, was fatally shot in Lviv; authorities are investigating the assassination.
Andriy Parubiy, a prominent Ukrainian politician and former parliamentary speaker, was fatally shot in Lviv on August 30, 2025. The 54-year-old was attacked around noon in the city's Frankivskyi district by an assailant who fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
Parubiy was a key figure in Ukraine's 2013–14 Euromaidan protests advocating for closer ties with the European Union. He served as parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019 and was secretary of the National Security and Defense Council during the 2014 conflict when Russia annexed Crimea.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the killing as a "terrible murder" and stated that all necessary resources are being deployed to investigate and apprehend the perpetrator. Authorities, including Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, are actively investigating the incident, though no motive has been confirmed.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and officials. Former President Petro Poroshenko described the assassination as "a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine," highlighting Parubiy's contributions to the nation's sovereignty. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called Parubiy "a patriot and statesman who made an enormous contribution to the defense of Ukraine's freedom, independence, and sovereignty."
The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies conducting a comprehensive manhunt to locate the suspect.
