Andriy Parubiy, former speaker of Ukraine's parliament and a prominent figure in the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests, was assassinated in Lviv on August 30, 2025. The 54-year-old was shot multiple times by an assailant disguised as a food delivery worker, who then fled the scene.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the killing as a "horrific murder" and stated that "all necessary forces and means" are engaged in the investigation and search for the killer.
Parubiy served as parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019 and was secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council during the early stages of the 2014 conflict with Russia.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the perpetrator, with investigations considering all possible motives, including potential Russian involvement.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and officials. Former President Petro Poroshenko described the killing as "a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine," while Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called Parubiy "a patriot and statesman who made an enormous contribution to the defense of Ukraine's freedom, independence, and sovereignty."
The assassination has raised concerns about security in western Ukraine, a region previously considered safer amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
