Iceland summons U.S. ambassador after Trump shares map depicting Iceland under American flag

Resumen

Iceland's foreign minister called in the newly arrived U.S. ambassador to protest a map posted by President Donald Trump that showed Iceland and other nations overlaid with the U.S. flag.

Iceland’s foreign minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned U.S. ambassador Billy Long, who presented his credentials last month, to express displeasure over a map posted on President Donald Trump’s social-media platform. The image displayed the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean covered by the American stars and stripes and labeled "United States of America."

The summons follows previous tensions linked to Trump’s public statements about acquiring Greenland and suggesting Canada become a 51st U.S. state. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also criticised the post, reiterating that Greenland’s government and people have repeatedly rejected any American annexation.

Trump’s post appeared without a caption and came days after the European Commission announced a €200 million investment in Greenland focused on education, internet connectivity, raw-material use and hydropower, during a visit by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the Danish prime minister.
