Summary

Voters in New Hampshire will choose nominees for Senate and House seats, with former Senator John Sununu backed by President Trump and Democrat Chris Pappas facing a progressive challenger.

Voters in New Hampshire will cast ballots in primary contests that could shape the state's Senate and House races ahead of the 2024 general election. Former Republican Senator John Sununu, endorsed by President Donald Trump, is seeking the GOP nomination for the open Senate seat left by retiring Democrat Jeanne Shaheen. Sununu competes primarily against former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown, who also served as Trump’s ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.

On the Democratic side, Representative Chris Pappas, who has held the 1st Congressional District since 2018, is the leading candidate for the Senate nomination. He is being challenged by Karishma Manzur, a scientist affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, who advocates for policies such as Medicare for All and has criticized Pappas over his stance on Israel.

The GOP primary also features support for Sununu from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Sununu previously served in the Senate from 2003 to 2008 and comes from a family with a history of statewide office.

In the House races, the 1st District seat vacated by Pappas is attracting a crowded field. Among the Democratic candidates, former Marine Maura Sullivan and health advocate Stefany Shaheen are viewed as establishment contenders, while Army National Guard officer Christian Urrutia and union organizer Carleigh Beriont run on progressive platforms. The Republican primary includes auto businessman Anthony DiLorenzo, who has received endorsements from Trump and other GOP leaders, facing state Representative Brian Cole and veteran Hollie Noveletsky.

In the 2nd Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Maggie Goodlander is challenged by state Representative Paige Beauchemin, who runs on a progressive platform that includes Medicare for All and stricter regulation of data centers and artificial intelligence. Beauchemin’s campaign has raised significantly less money than Goodlander’s and has not secured major outside progressive support.

"Trump backed Sununu, who also has support from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee," the article notes.

"Manzur has sharply criticized Pappas over support and funding for Israel, saying he is ‘enabling genocide,’" the piece reports.

The primaries, scheduled to close between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern time across municipalities, will determine the matchups for what is expected to be a competitive Senate race and several closely watched House contests.
