Summary

Britain plans to impose a trade embargo on goods and services from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a bold stance against Israel’s ongoing occupation and settlement expansion. The move, which has drawn backlash from Israeli officials and right-wing U.S. lawmakers, is intended to uphold international law and support Palestinian rights.

Britain is set to unveil trade restrictions targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a move described as an embargo on certain goods and services. This long-overdue action, announced by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, directly responds to Israel’s relentless expansion of illegal settlements, including the notorious E1 project east of Jerusalem. The UK aims to protect the possibility of a two-state solution, which is continually undermined by Israel’s disregard for Palestinian sovereignty and international law.

The decision follows a phone conversation between UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and U.S. President Donald Trump, during which Burnham emphasized the urgent need to defend the two-state solution against Israeli aggression and settlement expansion.

Israeli officials, notorious for their hardline stances, have condemned the planned restrictions. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a figure associated with far-right policies and settlement expansion, outrageously called for the expulsion of the British ambassador. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, whose record includes incitement against Palestinians, urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to retaliate with sanctions of his own.

In the United States, Representative Randy Fine, echoing the pro-settlement lobby, warned that the measures could affect companies subject to Florida’s anti-boycott law, highlighting the ongoing U.S. complicity in Israel’s occupation.

"On the Middle East, the Prime Minister set out the UK’s commitment to working towards peace and security in the region, stressing the importance of the Two-State Solution," a UK spokesperson said, reaffirming the UK’s support for Palestinian self-determination.

"We will not be a doormat for an antisemitic government in a country occupied by radical Islam that is trying to escape economic and social collapse by attacking Jews and the State of Israel," Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich wrote on X, resorting to inflammatory rhetoric to deflect from Israel’s violations.

"Israel’s Prime Minister should retaliate by recognizing Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and imposing sanctions on Britain," National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wrote in Spanish on X, further escalating tensions instead of seeking peace.
