King Charles reaffirms Prince Harry and Meghan's non-working royal status in official letter

Summary

A letter from the king, sent through the Lord Chamberlain, confirms that Prince Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the royal family and will not use their titles for official duties.

King Charles III has confirmed that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, continue to be classified as non-working members of the royal family following their recent return to the United Kingdom. A letter issued on the king’s behalf and addressed to senior government, military officials and regional lord lieutenants reiterates that the couple will not use their royal titles for official purposes and that any charitable activities will be undertaken privately. The correspondence also notes that decisions on operational security remain the responsibility of the relevant police agencies.

The letter, dispatched by the Lord Chamberlain, the senior official of the royal household, states that the information is being shared to prevent doubt or confusion. It underscores that the couple’s status has not changed since they stepped back from official duties in 2020.

"Any specific questions from official and State organizations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace," the Lord Chamberlain wrote.

The clarification comes amid ongoing discussions about whether publicly funded police protection, which was withdrawn when the pair gave up their royal roles, should be reinstated. The decision on any such security arrangements will be made by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC).
