UNC football coach addresses investigation, defends program culture

Summary

Coach Bill Belichick said the university is committed to a thorough investigation and maintaining high standards, while offering no new details on the ongoing probe into the football program.

Coach Bill Belichick spoke to the media on Monday, four days after the resignation of football general manager Michael Lombardi, to emphasize the university’s focus on a comprehensive investigation and adherence to its code of conduct. He said the priority is to ensure student-athletes receive "the utmost, best treatment and very best coaching" and that the program will act on any corrective actions identified.

Lombardi had been placed on paid administrative leave in late July following a human-resources complaint, but the university has not disclosed further specifics. University officials, including Vice Chancellor for Communications Dean Stoyer and Athletic Director Steve Newmark, were present at the press conference, and players were reminded they could not discuss the investigation.

When asked about his son, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who is on medical leave, the coach declined to comment, stating, "I love all my kids, but I’m not going to comment on a medical situation." He also noted there were no updates on the general manager or defensive coordinator positions and that responsibilities have been temporarily redistributed.

"In the end, we want to run a program in the very best way. If there’s things we need to do to correct it, we’ll obviously do ‘em," Belichick said.

Belichick affirmed the program’s compliance with NCAA rules and university policies, describing the atmosphere as "totally" compliant. He said he keeps players informed about the investigation and stresses accountability on and off the field.

Team captains Christo Kelly and Benjamin Hall echoed the coach’s sentiment, saying the investigation does not distract the players and that their focus remains on football ahead of the home opener on Sept. 12.

The university’s statement on Lombardi’s departure indicated the investigation will continue and appropriate corrective actions will be considered based on the findings.
