EU pledges €200 million to strengthen ties with Greenland

Resumen

The European Commission announced a €200 million funding package for Greenland, focusing on connectivity, clean energy and critical raw materials, as the region faces renewed interest from the United States.

The European Commission said on Monday it will provide Greenland with a €200 million package to deepen cooperation in connectivity, clean energy and critical raw materials. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the funding alongside Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, describing Greenland as a strategic ally and trusted friend of the bloc.

"This partnership package focuses mainly on three domains, or strategic priorities. We call them the big Cs: connectivity, clean energy and critical raw materials," von der Leyen told reporters.

The investment, slated for disbursement through 2027, aims to reinforce EU-Arctic relations. Nielsen thanked the EU, saying the union remains an important partner and a loyal friend.

Denmark’s Frederiksen said the country values cooperation with both the United States and its European partners on security and defence, while emphasizing a desire for closer ties with the EU in the Arctic.

The announcement follows recent political developments, including Iceland’s decision to halt EU membership talks and ongoing discussions between the United States, Denmark and Greenland regarding the territory’s future.
