Trump Administration Cancels $679 Million in Offshore Wind Project Funding
The U.S. Transportation Department has rescinded $679 million in federal funding for 12 offshore wind projects across 11 states, redirecting the funds to other infrastructure initiatives.
The U.S. Transportation Department has rescinded $679 million in federal funding allocated to 12 offshore wind projects across 11 states. This includes $435 million for a floating wind farm in Northern California and $47 million for a project in Maryland. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the funds will be redirected to upgrade ports and other infrastructure where possible.
"Wasteful, wind projects are using resources that could otherwise go towards revitalizing America's maritime industry," Duffy said.
This action is part of a broader effort by the administration to reduce support for renewable energy projects. Recently, the Energy Department withdrew a $716 million loan guarantee intended to upgrade transmission infrastructure for an offshore wind project in New Jersey. Additionally, construction of the nearly complete Revolution Wind project off the coasts of Rhode Island and Connecticut was halted to address unspecified national security concerns.
Critics argue that these decisions jeopardize jobs and hinder progress toward clean energy goals. California Representative Jared Huffman described the funding cancellation as "outrageous" and expressed concern over the potential loss of thousands of jobs and affordable, reliable power for consumers.
The administration has indicated that the rescinded funds will be repurposed to enhance ports and other infrastructure projects within the United States.
