Former Air Force secretary alleges Pentagon leadership climate discourages dissent

सारांश

Former Air Force secretary Frank Kendall said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has created an environment where senior officers fear speaking openly, citing recent resignations and blocked promotions.

Former Air Force secretary Frank Kendall III told ABC's This Week that senior leaders in the Pentagon feel reluctant to share dissenting views because of perceived pressure from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Kendall said commanders worry that voicing concerns could jeopardize their careers, and he noted that several high-ranking officers have left or been forced out in recent months.

Kendall said, "In many cases I think he’s not getting good advice because people are afraid to tell him things that he doesn’t want to hear." He added that "very good people" are departing due to the current climate and the demands placed on the military.

The remarks follow the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, a close associate of Vice President JD Vance, who had reportedly clashed with Hegseth for months. Driscoll's departure is part of a broader pattern of senior exits that includes former Navy Secretary John Phelan and former Air Force chief of staff General David W. Allvin, who left before completing his term.

Critics have also highlighted that Hegseth has delayed or blocked promotions for dozens of generals and admirals, a move that has drawn scrutiny from Congress. While Hegseth argues the actions aim to ensure the military has appropriate leadership, he has not detailed the criteria used.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis criticized Hegseth's management, stating he has not seen comparable challenges to the leadership of service members and urging the president to consider a replacement. Hegseth's office has not commented on the resignations.

The Department of Defense has not responded to requests for comment.
