A 38-year-old man was arrested at the Canfield Fair after entering a Democratic Party tent and confronting gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, resulting in minor injuries to several fairgoers but leaving the candidate unharmed.
Ohio State Highway Patrol officials stated that Patrick M. Havas, 38, of Canfield, moved through a crowd at the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent during a speech by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dr. Amy Acton at the Canfield Fair on September 6. The suspect pushed past attendees, causing at least two older adults to fall, before being restrained by the patrol’s executive protection unit.
Law enforcement recovered two pistols and a taser from Havas, but officials emphasized that no weapons were drawn from their holsters. Havas was booked on disorderly conduct and two assault counts and transferred to Mahoning County Jail.
Dr. Acton was unharmed and assisted volunteers who tended to the injured. Political figures, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, former U.S. Rep. John Boccieri, and candidates from both parties, condemned the incident and commended law enforcement for their effective response.
The Canfield Fair, which upholds the Second Amendment by permitting firearms on its grounds except inside marked buildings, has faced renewed scrutiny after this event. The incident has sparked debate about security at political events as Ohio approaches its gubernatorial race.
