Spider-Man: Brand New Day Nears Domestic Box-Office Record

Summary

The film has surpassed $900 million in North America and could overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing domestic release.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to spend a sixth straight weekend at the top of the U.S. box office and is closing in on the domestic earnings record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Sony-Marvel release has earned more than $900 million in North America, placing it second only to the 2015 Star Wars film, which has accumulated about $936 million.

Projections estimate the movie will bring in roughly $22 million during the four-day Labor Day weekend. If it maintains its current pace, the film could become the highest-grossing domestic title of all time.

Globally, Brand New Day has generated over $2.33 billion, ranking third worldwide behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. It recently passed Avatar: The Way of Water in total international earnings.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film has faced little competition from new releases such as By Any Means and Onslaught. Actor Tom Holland may also top the weekend box office in a second position with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is expected to earn about $16.4 million.

The final Labor Day weekend totals will determine how close Brand New Day comes to breaking the domestic record, with analysts indicating the question is now "when" rather than "if".
