Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has not secured contract extension ahead of season opener
Christian Gonzalez remains unsigned on a new deal and said he is focusing on practice as the Patriots prepare for their opening game.
Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has not reached a contract extension as the team approaches its season opener in four days. The 2023 first-round pick, who is under his original contract for the next two seasons with a base salary of $2.259 million this year, said he is concentrating on daily practice sessions lasting 30 to 40 minutes.
"I’m focused on today," Gonzalez told the Boston Herald via Doug Kyed. "Right now, it is practice in what, a couple, 30 minutes, 40 minutes. Worried on that right now, so we’ll focus on that."
When asked about the status of negotiations, Gonzalez replied, "I don’t know," indicating that talks have not progressed. He expressed continued frustration that a new deal has not been finalized.
The situation follows the Seattle Seahawks' recent four-year, $132 million contract for cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who shares the same agent, Reggie Johnson, with Gonzalez. Gonzalez, the 17th overall pick in 2023, earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2025, compiling 145 tackles, two interceptions, 24 pass breakups and a sack over three seasons.
