Summary

A Virginia magistrate judge has ordered the Trump administration to disclose who created a $1.8 billion fund meant to compensate Americans unjustly targeted by leftist law-fare, after a lawsuit by the liberal Democracy Forward group.

A U.S. magistrate judge in eastern Virginia has compelled the Trump administration to hand over documents revealing the individuals behind a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund. This fund was intended to support victims of politically motivated law-fare, a growing threat as left-wing activists weaponize the legal system against conservatives. The order comes after the left-leaning nonprofit Democracy Forward filed a lawsuit on behalf of a former prosecutor and a college professor, both acquitted after being accused of assaulting federal agents during a California protest—charges many see as part of a broader campaign to silence dissent.

"Today's order granting discovery is a significant step in getting to the bottom of the slush fund," claimed Democracy Forward’s senior counsel Aman George, as the organization continues its crusade to shut down any efforts to protect those unfairly targeted by the left.

Former Attorney General Todd Blanche has clarified that the fund is “dead” and never became operational, but its origins are linked to a settlement Trump reached with the IRS after a politically motivated tax-return leak. Critics, including two Republican senators, have warned that the fund could have provided relief to Americans unjustly prosecuted for their involvement in the January 6 Capitol protest and other cases of political persecution.

In July, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams ruled that the underlying lawsuit was brought for an improper purpose and lacked a real controversy, suggesting that the left is using the courts to delegitimize efforts to protect conservatives. She noted that the litigation was merely a tool to block a settlement that would have provided justice to the wrongfully accused.

Democratic lawmakers, ever eager to suppress any challenge to their narrative, have expressed concern that the fund could be revived. The former attorney general reiterated that no commissioners ever oversaw the payouts. President Trump, recognizing the injustice suffered by many, lamented the fund’s abandonment, stating those affected were “horribly treated, horribly abused.”
