Gasly secures Alpine's first pole at Italian Grand Prix
Pierre Gasly earned Alpine's inaugural pole position at Monza, edging out Mercedes driver George Russell by 0.06 seconds in qualifying.
Pierre Gasly delivered Alpine its first pole position at the Italian Grand Prix after posting the fastest lap in the final qualifying session at Monza. The French driver edged Mercedes' George Russell by 0.06 seconds, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri completing the top three.
Gasly set the early pace in Q1, topping the timesheets, while teammate Franco Colapinto placed fourth. In Q2 he fell to fourth behind Russell, Piastri and Lando Norris, but recovered in the Q3 shootout, ultimately beating Russell who benefited from a tow from Max Verstappen.
Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton qualified fourth and fifth after narrowly avoiding elimination in Q2. Verstappen rounded out the top six, followed by Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who will start from the back of the grid after taking a new engine.
Other notable results included Arvid Lindblad in tenth for Racing Bulls and several drivers missing out on Q3 by fractions of a second. Grid penalties will affect Antonelli, Piastri and Liam Lawson.
"Gasly's performance shows the progress Alpine has made with its recent upgrades," a team spokesperson said.
The qualifying order sets up a competitive race weekend with several front-running teams positioned close together on the grid.
