LSU Keeps Former NFL Players Off Roster Amid SEC Legal Dispute
LSU head coach Lane Kiffan said the decision to exclude former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris from Saturday’s game was based on uncertainty surrounding an SEC lawsuit, while the conference continues legal action to block their participation.
LSU announced that former NFL wide receiver Dae’Quan Wright and defensive back Zxavian Harris will not be on the roster for the upcoming game against Clemson, citing uncertainty over potential repercussions from the Southeastern Conference’s legal challenge. The SEC has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to prevent member schools from fielding players who have previously played in the NFL, although a preliminary injunction in Louisiana currently bars the conference or the NCAA from imposing penalties.
"We believe this is in the best interest of the school," LSU head coach Lane Kiffan said during an ESPN interview, adding that the players could be added to the roster later if the situation changes.
Legal counsel for the athletes, Ryan Downton, described LSU’s move as a “measured decision” and urged parties to “lower the temperature and look at the facts.” He noted that neither player has appeared in a preseason game for LSU.
SEC officials and college football analysts have warned that continued resistance could jeopardize LSU’s standing in the conference, though no formal vote has yet been taken. The dispute remains unresolved as the 2026 season approaches, and further court rulings are expected.
