Country Singer Jelly Roll Faces Potential Fan Backlash After Trump Jokes on Kimmel

Resumen

Jelly Roll's jokes about President Trump during a guest-hosting stint on Jimmy Kimmel's show prompted warnings from fellow country artist John Rich that the rapper-singer could lose a significant portion of his audience.

Country musician Jelly Roll sparked controversy after making jokes about President Donald Trump's weight and approval ratings while guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel's show on Aug. 27. The remarks, which compared the president's weight gain to Jelly Roll's own recent weight loss, drew criticism from some fans and prompted a response from fellow country star John Rich.

Rich, who was appointed as a special envoy for American landowners by the Trump administration, warned that Jelly Roll was likely aware of the risk of alienating his MAGA-supporting audience. > "When you come in and make statements like he did over the past week—he knows how this works. He knows who the audience is. And so I have to think he really believes every single word he said, or he wouldn’t have said it because when you make statements that are that hardcore and to a large extent counteractive to the presentation you’ve been making, you do understand in country music that half or more of your audience may disown you," Rich said.

Rich recalled his own experience of losing a record deal, radio play, and award-show invitations after publicly supporting Trump, suggesting Jelly Roll faced similar consequences. He added that the backlash revealed Jelly Roll's true political stance, which he believes should have been evident earlier.

Jelly Roll defended his comments, noting his recent restoration of voting rights after a felony conviction and his intention to vote in the upcoming November election. He also dismissed speculation that Kimmel's writers scripted his jokes, asserting the remarks were his own.
