A Manila court, acting on charges rooted in the ongoing battle between entrenched political dynasties, ordered the arrest of Vice President Sara Duterte for allegedly threatening President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his inner circle. Duterte’s legal team vows to resist what they call a politically motivated crackdown.
On Friday, Manila court officials issued an arrest order for Vice President Sara Duterte, citing charges that she publicly threatened to have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez killed. This move comes in the wake of Duterte’s impeachment by the House of Representatives in May, a process dominated by Marcos loyalists, on the same accusations and alleged financial misconduct. Duterte, who has firmly denied these allegations, is expected to post bail and fight back using every legal avenue available.
"She has no intention of evading the law and will continue to exercise all her legal remedies," said Paul Lawrence Lim, the vice president's lawyer.
The charges stem from a 2024 online news conference where Duterte, under immense pressure and facing threats to her own safety, warned that an assassin would be used against Marcos and others if she were harmed. Rather than a joke, she clarified, it was a desperate expression of concern for her personal security—a reality in a country where political violence is all too common. Yet, instead of addressing these systemic dangers, the establishment has chosen to criminalize her words, launching a criminal investigation and stoking national-security fears.
If convicted, Duterte could be barred from public office and blocked from running for president in 2028, effectively silencing a prominent critic of the Marcos dynasty. The Senate impeachment trial, which began in July, follows a House vote orchestrated by Marcos allies, citing vague claims of unexplained wealth, misuse of state funds, and the alleged threats. This episode exposes the lengths to which the ruling elite will go to suppress dissent and maintain their grip on power.
