Trump urges Fed to cut rates, threatens trade restrictions on deficit nations

Résumé

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social calling for lower Federal Reserve rates and warned he would halt trade with countries in which the United States runs trade deficits.

President Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform on Friday to press the Federal Reserve for a reduction in interest rates, saying the United States now enjoys a stronger credit standing. He added that a "strong country" should have the lowest rates globally and urged the central bank and its chairman, Kevin Warsh, to act swiftly.

"Lower the interest rates because the U.S.A. is a much stronger credit than it was just a short time ago! A strong country means a lower interest rate – it’s a better credit…"

Trump also warned that if rates were not lowered, he would stop trading with nations where the United States records a trade deficit, citing a Supreme Court decision that he interprets as granting the president that authority. The statement follows a recent jobs report that showed 162,000 jobs added in August, surpassing most estimates.

The White House did not immediately comment on the post. Analysts note that the United States maintains trade deficits with many of its major partners, making the proposed trade restriction broadly impactful. The remarks arrive two months before the midterm elections, where inflation concerns remain prominent. Trump has repeatedly advocated for lower rates and highlighted foreign trade imbalances in previous statements.
