Ryan Seacrest Declines to Involve Himself in Wheel of Fortune Announcer Investigation

Summary

A television insider says host Ryan Seacrest is avoiding any public role in the suspension of Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton as Sony Pictures Television investigates alleged misconduct on a 2023 flight.

Ryan Seacrest, who will soon celebrate two years as the host of Wheel of Fortune, is reportedly staying out of the controversy surrounding the show's longtime announcer, Jim Thornton. An insider quoted in a recent Substack newsletter said Seacrest prefers not to become involved in workplace drama and leaves such matters to network executives.

Thornton, 61, was suspended by Sony Pictures Television after a passenger on an American Airlines flight in May alleged misconduct. His attorney told media outlets that Thornton was not arrested, faced no charges, and that law enforcement concluded the investigation quickly with no wrongdoing found.

Sony confirmed that it is "recasting" Thornton's role while it conducts a "thorough investigation" into the incident. The announcer has been with Wheel of Fortune since 2011, succeeding Charlie O'Donnell.

"Ryan doesn't do drama — especially somebody else's," the insider said, adding that the host "protects Ryan" by avoiding public challenges to the network or attaching his brand to another person's crisis.

The insider’s comments suggest Seacrest is focusing on his own career rather than commenting on the ongoing investigation.
